The owner of the dog, Yang Jiali, said she discovered the baby boy when the animal began frantically digging at a hole under a bush, reported Pear Video, which produces short news videos in China.

Ms Yang said the baby was wrapped in white cloth and his mouth was filled with mud when the dog discovered him earlier this month in the town of Wutan, in China’s south-western megacity of Chongqing.

According to the Pear Video report, local doctors said that the baby was about one month old. They suspected that he had a serious illness and was buried by parents who believed he was dead.

Yang Jiali, the owner of the dog, said that when the animal started digging frantically, she found the baby boy.

Song Yue, an assistant doctor at a health center in Wuhan described the baby’s condition after he was found on May 6.

“The baby looked pale. His breathing and pulse were slow. He had low blood heat, and his whole mouth was filled with mud,” she said.

Li Feng, the director pediatrician of Jiangjin District center hospital, which is found nearby, said the baby’s condition had improved, but he wasn’t out of danger.

Doctor Li said: “While his life isn’t out of danger, his body index is recovering and stable.”

Pear Video reported that no one came to the hospital to pick up the child, and the police have launched an investigation.

There are previous reports of babies being buried alive in China.

In rural areas, private burial of small babies is common, and some parents mistakenly believe that the child is dead.

But some parents from poverty-stricken areas often act in desperation if they believe they are doing not have the financial means to worry for his or her offspring.

Two years ago, a baby with hare lips was found in a cardboard box in south Guangxi.
