Anyone who has visited the beautiful island of Bali knows that, as beautiful as it is, it does have a stray dog problem, and it is quite common to encounter street dogs while walking around towns and villages.

While the government struggles to keep things under control and prevent rabies outbreaks, shelters and citizens take matters into their own hands to give the poor, abandoned pups the best life possible.

Bali is known for its Hindu faith, and Yudhishthira, a king who approached heaven with his dog, is an important figure in Hindu belief. As a result, many Hindus believe that caring for or adopting dogs can also pave the way to heaven.

A beautiful example of this is the story of Rico Soegiarto, a gentle soul who discovered a husky on the street, sore-ridden and severely malnourished.

Rico, 26, first saw the dog on the streets of Denpasar, where she had bald spots and was so thin you could see her bones through her diseased skin. She didn’t have much time left.

Despite her condition, her brilliant blue eyes shone brightly, and Rico knew he had to give the neglected pup another chance. “I’m not sure what was special about her,” Rico admitted to Bored Panda. “It’s all about the heart and the feelings.” I found her on my way home from work; she was in the middle of the street.”

And what a second chance that was. Rico shared the results of his beloved new pet’s transformation after carefully nursing the husky back to health with grooming, pet visits, and plenty of good food.

It’s simply incredible! The husky clearly adores Rico and can’t keep her paws off her savior, now strong and healthy with a thick, lustrous coat and those same burning blue eyes.

“She enjoys being petted and devours cookies!” Rico informed us. “And she is so gregarious that she sometimes worries me.”

In Bali, there are a lot of thieves.” She is now safe with Rico, who has four other dogs and is an animal lover. So what did he name his miracle pup who had survived such adversity? “Her given name is Hope.”
